ช่วงท้ายรัฐบาล เตรียมเข้าสู่โหมดเลือกตั้งใหม่ สำนักโพลต่างๆ มักจะทำโพลเช็กเรตติ้ง ว่าในสถานการณ์การเมืองปัจจุบันนี้ ประชาชนเห็นว่าใครเหมาะเป็นผู้นำคนต่อไป หรือพรรคการเมืองไหนมาแรง

อย่างสำนัก “ซูเปอร์โพล” ที่ ดร.นพดล กรรณิกา เป็นผู้อำนวยการอยู่ ก็ออกมาเผยผลสำรวจครั้งล่าสุด ในหัวข้อ “ผู้นำการเมือง เหนือความขัดแย้งของสังคม” โดยถามความเห็นจากกลุ่มตัวอย่างทุกสาขาอาชีพ ทั่วประเทศกว่า 2 พันคน เมื่อช่วงวันที่ 26–29 ต.ค.ที่ผ่านมา พบว่า…

กลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่ หรือร้อยละ 66.1 ระบุว่า ต้นตอของความขัดแย้งของสังคมไทย มาจากขบวนการลบหลู่ ดูหมิ่น สถาบันหลักของชาติ , รองลงมา คือร้อยละ 53.4 เห็นว่าเป็นเพราะกลุ่มการเมืองรับเงินต่างชาติ มาป่วนเมืองไทย , ขณะที่ร้อยละ 41.9 เห็นว่า “ขบวนการสามนิ้ว” เป็นตัวการก่อความขัดแย้ง , ร้อยละ 32.0 ระบุ ขบวนการปฏิรูปสถาบันหลักของชาติ คือต้นตอของความขัดแย้ง , ขณะที่ ร้อยละ 26.2 ระบุ มาจากการปฏิวัติ ยึดอำนาจ…

สำหรับ “ผู้นำการเมืองเหนือความขัดแย้งของสังคม” ที่กลุ่มตัวอย่างเทคะแนนให้เป็นอันดับ 1 หรือ ร้อยละ 35.8 คือ “อนุทิน ชาญวีรกูล” รองนายกรัฐมนตรี รมว.สาธารณสุข และหัวหน้าพรรคภูมิใจไทย

ส่วนเหตุที่ชอบนั้นเป็นเพราะ ไม่มีประวัติขัดแย้งกับใคร พูดน้อย ใครด่ามาถือเป็นข้อเตือนใจ เป็นคนจิตใจดี มีผลงานช่วยเหลือต่อชีวิตผู้ป่วยผ่าตัดหัวใจ และอื่นๆ แก้ปัญหาวิกฤตโควิด ระบบสาธารณสุข เป็นคนดีช่วยเหลือชาวบ้านคนตัวเล็กตัวน้อย มีฝีมือ มีเงิน ร่ำรวย และ ชอบคนรวย เป็นต้น

ตามมาด้วยอันดับ 2 หรือ ร้อยละ 29.7 คือ “พล.อ.ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา” นายกรัฐมนตรี เพราะเป็นผู้นำการยึดอำนาจ คุมอยู่ ไม่ลุกลาม บ้านเมืองเรียบร้อย ไม่วุ่นวาย ซื่อสัตย์ โปร่งใส และชอบทหาร เป็นต้น

อันดับ 3 หรือ ร้อยละ 13.1 ระบุ “น.ส.แพทองธาร ชินวัตร” ว่าที่แคนดิเดตนายกรัฐมนตรี ของพรรคเพื่อไทย เพราะอยากเห็นผู้หญิงเป็นผู้นำ เป็นคนรุ่นใหม่ ไม่มีประวัติขัดแย้งกับใคร และเป็นลูกสาวอดีตนายกฯ ทักษิณ ชินวัตร เป็นต้น

เมื่อลงรายละเอียดถึง “ช่วงอายุ” ของกลุ่มตัวอย่าง พบว่า “อนุทิน” ได้รับฐานสนับสนุนจากกลุ่มอายุ 25–39 ปีมากที่สุด คือร้อยละ 39.5 รองลงมาคือกลุ่มอายุไม่เกิน 24 ปี ร้อยละ 33.1 และกลุ่มอายุ 40 ปีขึ้นไป ร้อยละ 31.9

ส่วน“พล.อ.ประยุทธ์” พบว่าฐานสนับสนุนเป็นกลุ่มอายุไม่เกิน 24 ปี ร้อยละ 18.8 กลุ่มอายุ 25–39 ปี ร้อยละ 25.2 และ กลุ่มอายุ 40 ปีขึ้นไป ร้อยละ36.5

ขณะที่ “อุ๊งอิ๊ง” น.ส.แพทองธาร ได้รับฐานสนับสนุนจากกลุ่มอายุไม่เกิน 24 ปี ร้อยละ 15 ถึงร้อยละ 20 ในขณะที่กลุ่มอายุที่ยิ่งสูงขึ้น ยิ่งมีสัดส่วนฐานสนับสนุนลดลง

จะเห็นว่า “อนุทิน” ได้รับเสียงสนับสนุนทั้งจาก กลุ่มคนรุ่นใหม่ คนวัยกลางคน และผู้สูงอายุ ในสัดส่วนที่ใกล้เคียงกัน ต่างจาก “พล.อ.ประยุทธ์” ซึ่งคนที่ชื่นชอบ จะเป็นผู้สูงอายุ ขณะที่ “อุ๊งอิ๊ง” เป็นขวัญใจคนรุ่นใหม่ แต่วัยกลางคน และผู้สูงอายุจะไม่โอเคด้วย

ผลการสำรวจครั้งนี้ เห็นได้ชัดว่า ประชาชนมองความขัดแย้งของสังคมไทย ว่ามีต้นตอมาจาก การลบหลู่ดูหมิ่นสถาบันหลักของชาติ ซึ่งก็คือสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ ที่ฝ่ายหนึ่ง ปกป้อง เทิดทูน จงรักภักดี กับอีกฝ่ายที่พยายามวิพากวิจารณ์ ด้อยค่า หาทางปฏิรูป และยังมีกลุ่มการเมืองรับเงินต่างชาติมาป่วน มีขบวนการสามนิ้ว รวมทั้งการปฏิวัติ ยึดอำนาจ การควบรวมผูกขาดทางธุรกิจ พลังงาน อาหาร และสื่อสาร และช่องว่างความเหลื่อมล้ำของงบประมาณ และทรัพยากรระหว่างการพัฒนาเมืองกับชนบท ก็มีส่วนในการสร้างความขัดแย้ง

ในสถานการณ์เช่นนี้ ประชาชนจึงต้องการ “ผู้นำทางการเมือง” หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งก็คือ “นายกรัฐมนตรี” ที่อยู่เหนือความขัดแย้ง เพื่อเป็นผู้ถือธงนำในการสร้างสรรค์สังคม เพื่อไปสู่ความสมานฉันท์ ปรองดองของคนในประเทศ

“อนุทิน ชาญวีรกูล” รองนายกรัฐมนตรี รมว.สาธารณสุข และหัวหน้าพรรคภูมิใจไทย จึงได้รับการเลือกให้เป็น “ผู้นำการเมืองที่อยู่เหนือความขัดแย้งของสังคม” ซึ่งในเหตุผลของกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่สำรวจมานั้น เห็นว่า “อนุทิน” เป็นนักการเมืองที่มีคู่ขัดแย้งน้อยที่สุด เป็นคนพูดน้อย ใครด่ามาก็จะไม่โต้ตอบ แต่ถือเป็นข้อเตือนใจที่จะนำไปแก้ไขปรับปรุง เป็นคนจิตใจดี มีผลงานช่วยเหลือต่อชีวิตชาวบ้าน จากโครงการ “หัวใจติดปีก” ที่ใช้เครื่องบินส่วนตัวนำทีมแพทย์ไปรับหัวใจ หรืออวัยวะที่มีผู้บริจาค เพื่อมาช่วยผู้ป่วยที่ผ่าตัดหัวใจ และอวัยวะอื่นๆ มาอย่างต่อเนื่อง แก้วิกฤตการแพร่ระบาดของโควิด-19 ก็ทำได้ดี ไม่มีประวัติด่างพร้อยในเรื่องทุจริต คอร์รัปชัน มีฐานะดี และชาวบ้านเชื่อว่าคนมีฐานะดี จะช่วยพวกเขาได้

หากย้อนดูเส้นทางการเมืองของ “อนุทิน”จะเห็นว่าเขาเป็นผู้สืบทอดของ “ปู่จิ้น” ชวรัตน์ ชาญวีรกูล อดีต รมว.มหาดไทย และผู้ก่อตั้งบริษัท “ซิโน-ไทย” บริษัทรับเหมาก่อสร้างในลำดับต้นๆของประเทศไทย

ปี 2539 เขาเป็นที่ปรึกษา รมว.การต่างประเทศ และเป็นรมช.สาธารณสุข ช่วงรัฐบาล “ทักษิณ 2” …ต่อมาพรรคไทยรักไทย ถูกยุบ “อนุทิน” ต้องเป็นสมาชิกบ้านเลขที่ 111 ถูกตัดสิทธิทางการเมือง 5 ปี เมื่อพ้นโทษแบน เขาได้เข้าเป็นสมาชิกพรรคภูมิใจไทย และได้รับเลือกตั้งเป็นหัวหน้าพรรค เมื่อวันที่14 ต.ค.55

ถึงวันนี้ “อนุทิน” เป็นรองนายกรัฐมนตรี และรมว.สาธารณสุข เป็นหัวหน้าพรรคภูมิใจไทย ที่มีส.ส.ระดับ “บ้านใหญ่”ต้องการย้ายไปร่วมชายคา

กว่า 20 ปี ที่ “อนุทิน” โลดแล่น เก็บรับประสบการณ์ ผ่านการเคี่ยวกรำทางการเมือง รู้ว่าอะไรเป็นอะไร รู้ทิศทางลม เรียกได้ว่า เข้าใจธรรมชาติของการเมืองไทย เข้าใจระบบราชการไทย มีความรู้ด้านเศรษฐกิจ และที่สำคัญ มีความชัดเจนว่าเป็นผู้ที่จงรักภักดีต่อสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ และวันนี้เขายังได้รับความเห็นจากประชาชนให้เป็น “ผู้นำการเมืองเหนือความขัดแย้ง”

** โศกนาฏกรรม “อิแทวอน” บทเรียน “คนตายในพื้นที่แคบ” อย่าให้เกิดขึ้นแถวตรอกข้าวสาร หรือที่ไหนๆ ในบ้านเรา

ฮัลโลวีนปีนี้ กลายเป็นเทศกาลที่ก่อความเศร้าสลดใจคนทั่วโลก เมื่อเกิดเหตุ “คนเหยียบกันตาย” ในย่านอิแทวอน แหล่งท่องเที่ยวชื่อดังของกรุงโซล เกาหลีใต้ ตามที่สำนักข่าวต่างประเทศรายงาน ล่าสุดถึงช่วงเย็นวานนี้ (30 ต.ค.) มีผู้เสียชีวิตแล้ว 153 ราย เป็นชาวต่างชาติ 20 ราย ในนั้นรวมสาวไทยวัย 27 ปี 1 คน ที่ต้องขอแสดงความเสียใจไว้ ณ ที่นี้

ต้นสาวราวเรื่องของเหตุสลดครั้งนี้ ตามที่สื่อต่างประเทศรายงาน ก็เนื่องมาจากผู้คนแออัดยัดเยียดเข้าไปเที่ยวในย่าน “อิแทวอน” ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้ก็จัดเทศกาลฮัลโลวีนเป็นประจำทุกปี ในช่วงปลายเดือนตุลาคม แต่ต้องหยุดไป เนื่องมาจากการระบาดของโควิด-19 พอกลับมาจัดอีกครั้ง จึงเหมือนกับได้โอกาสปลดปล่อยหลังอัดอั้นมา 3 ปีเต็มๆ มวลมหานักท่องเที่ยวจากภายในเกาหลีใต้ และจากทั่วโลกจึงหลั่งไหล เข้ามา

แต่ด้วยลักษณะสถานที่ ย่านอิแทวอนที่เป็นซอยแคบๆ เต็มไปด้วยคลับ บาร์ ร้านอาหาร ร้านขายของแบรนด์เนม ทั้งสองฟากข้างทาง ตามข่าวบอกว่า มีผู้คนประมาณ 100,000 คน ทะลักเข้ามาในช่วงเย็นของวันที่ 29 ต.ค. จึงเกิดความแออัดยัดเยียดจนเดินไม่ได้ แต่ก็ยังมีคนเบียดเข้ามาเพิ่มเรื่อยๆ

เหตุสลดได้เริ่มขึ้นเมื่อเวลาประมาณ 22.30 น. ของวันที่ 29 ต.ค. ตามเวลาในเกาหลี หรือ 20.20 น. ตามเวลาบ้านเรา บริเวณตรอกเล็กๆ ใกล้กับโรงแรมแฮมิลตัน ซึ่งเป็นทางลงเนิน เมื่อมีกลุ่มคนที่อยู่บริเวณนั้นล้มลง คนอื่นๆ จึงล้มทับต่อๆ กันเป็นโดมิโน คนที่ถูกทับอยู่ด้านล่างขาดอากาศหายใจนานนับชั่วโมง กว่าเจ้าหน้าที่จะเข้าไปช่วยเหลือ ซึ่งตามข่าวบอกว่ามีเจ้าหน้าที่ดูแลแค่ 200 คนเท่านั้น

มีกระแสข่าวอีกด้านบอกว่า จุดเริ่มต้นของเหตุโกลาหล เนื่องจากมีคนดังมาเที่ยวผับ แล้วฝูงชนที่เป็นแฟนคลับพยายามจะกรูเข้าไปในผับดังกล่าว จนมีคนล้มลง ก่อนบานปลายกลายเป้นเหตุสะเทือนขวัญไปทั่วโลก

ขณะที่สื่อโซเชียลฯ แดนกิมจิ บางรายก็เสนอทฤษฎีว่าอาจเป็นเพราะฤทธิ์ยาเสพติด โดยมีภาพถ่ายหลายภาพที่อ้างว่าเป็น “ท็อฟฟี่ยาเสพติด” ซึ่งแจกจ่ายกระจายกันในงานนี้ ถูกนำออกเผยแพร่ไปในทวิตเตอร์

สำนักข่าวต่างประเทศ อธิบายสาเหตุที่มีคนตายจำนวนมาก ว่า เป็นเพราะผู้คนจำนวนมากที่อัดกันเข้าไปอยู่ในถนนแคบๆ ทำให้หลายคนเป็นลมล้มอยู่ในท่ามกลางฝูงชนก่อนถูกเหยียบย่ำ เมื่อเกิดเหตุโกลาหล ขณะที่การปฐมพยาบาลเป็นไปอย่างล่าช้า และไม่มีตำรวจอยู่ในที่เกิดเหตุเพื่อควบคุมฝูงชน เนื่องจากในช่วงเวลาเดียวกันมีการประท้วงใหญ่ที่เขตกวางฮวามุน ทำให้ต้องส่งกำลังตำรวจไปรักษาการณ์ที่นั่น

อีกด้านหนึ่ง ก็เป็นเพราะบรรดาร้านค้าในอิแทวอน และเจ้าหน้าที่เกาหลี ไม่ได้เตรียมการรับมือที่ดีพอต่อสถานการณ์ที่มีฝูงชนจำนวนมหาศาลมารวมตัวกัน

นอกจากนี้ ยังเป็นเพราะผู้ประกอบการสถานบันเทิง ผับ บาร์ ในย่านนั้น ได้ขัดขวางไม่ให้ผู้คนหนีออกมาจากจุดเกิดเหตุ แม้มีคนพยายามหนีตายเข้าไปในร้านค้าต่างๆ แต่ก็เข้าไปไม่ได้ เพราะเป็นช่วงเวลาปิดร้านแล้ว หรือบางคนก็ถูกการ์ดของร้านจับโยนกลับออกไป ตามที่สาวไทยรายหนึ่งที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์ได้เล่าในคลิปที่โพสต์ไว้ในเฟซบุ๊กส่วนตัวของเธอ

เห็นข่าวเศร้าสลดที่เกาหลีใต้ ก็อดที่จมองย้อนกลับมาบ้านเราไม่ได้ เพราะเหตุการณ์ทำนองนี้ ก็เคยเกิดขึ้นมาแล้วหลายครั้ง ล่าสุด ก็เป็นเหตุไฟไหม้ที่ผับ “เมาเท่น บี” อ.สัตหีบ จ.ชลบุรี เมื่อวันที่ 5 ส.ค. ทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตในที่เกิดเหตุ 13 ราย บาดเจ็บอีกเกือบ 40 ราย และทยอยเสียชีวิตมาเรื่อยๆอีก รวมเป็น 26 ราย โดยรายล่าสุดเสียชีวิตเมื่อวันที่ 27 ต.ค.ที่ผ่านมา โดยยังมีผู้บาดเจ็ยสาหัสที่หมอต้องพยายามยื้อชีวิตอยู่อีกจำนวนหนึ่ง

ย้อนไปก่อนนั้น ก็เป็นเหตุไฟไหม้ “ผับ ซานติก้า” สถานบันเทิงชื่อดังย่านเอกมัย เมื่อคืนวันที่ 31 ธ.ค. 51 มีผู้เสียชีวิตถึง 67 ราย บาดเจ็บสาหัส 45 คน บาดเจ็บทั่วไปอีก 72 คน

ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์ มีปัจจัยที่ทำให้ผู้คนต้องสังเวยชีวิตจำนวนมาก คล้ายๆ กัน นั่นคือ ทางเข้าออกหรือทางหนีไฟคับแคบ ไม่เพียงพอสำหรับให้นักท่องเที่ยวหนีออกจากอาคารได้ทันยามเกิดเหตุฉุกเฉิน

ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่ “อิแทวอน” ก็คล้ายๆกัน คือผู้คนจำนวนมาก ไม่สามารถหนีออกจากพื้นที่อันตรายได้ เมือ่เกิดเหตุฉุกเฉิน เพียงแต่เป็นเหตุการณ์เกิดนอกอาคาร ส่วนเคสของ “ซานติก้า ผับ” และ “เมาเท่น บี” ในไทยนั้น เกิดภายในอาคาร

จากเหตุสลดที่อิแทวอน “ผู้การแต้ม” พล.ต.ต.วิชัย สังข์ประไพ อดีตรอ งผู้บัญชาการตำรวจนครบาล ให้ความเห็นต่อสื่อมวลชนไว้น่าสนใจ ว่า ประเทศไทยควรจะถอดบทเรียนนี้ เพราะเราประสบปัญหาแบบนี้หลายครั้ง ถึงจะไม่ใหญ่เท่า แต่ก็มีปัญหา เช่น กรณีของไฟไหม้ผับ และคนมาเหยียบกันตายหน้าประตู ซึ่งเกี่ยวกับมาตรการในการดูแลความปลอดภัยทั้งนั้น จึงต้องตั้งคำถามว่า คนเยอะขนาดนี้ รัฐบาลควรจะเตรียมการอย่างไร เพราะเหตุของการเหยียบกันตายเกิดจากการมารวมกลุ่มกันจำนวนมาก
ยิ่งเรามีประเพณีมีงานสำคัญที่หลังจากโควิด คนก็คงอยากจะไปเที่ยว เพราะมีความอัดอั้นกันมานานก็จะมารวมตัวกันมาก เพราะฉะนั้นทุกจังหวัด ทุกหน่วยงาน หากจะจัดงานต้องมีมาตรการรองรับ พร้อมประชาสัมพันธ์ให้ทั่วพื้นที่ ว่ามีการจัดงานลักษณะเดียวกันที่ไหนบ้าง เพื่อให้คนกระจายไปท่องเที่ยว รวมถึงต้องจัดสถานที่ให้เหมาะสมกับคนที่จะมาท่องเที่ยวด้วย ยกตัวอย่าง เช่น “ตรอกข้าวสาร” ใครๆ ก็อยากจะไปเที่ยว เพราะเป็นสัญลักษณ์เช่นเดียวกับ “อิแทวอน”

ความเห็นของ “ผู้การแต้ม” นับว่าตรงใจประชาชนทีเดียว ก็ได้แต่หวังว่า ลุงๆ ผู้มีอำนาจในบ้านเมือง จะได้เอาไปแปลงเป็นคำสั่งการให้ทุกภาคส่วนที่เกี่ยวข้องนำไปปฏิบัติ ไม่ให้เหตุสลดแบบ “ฮัลโลวีน อิแทวอน” มาเกิดซ้ำรอยในประเทศไทยอีก

From cake smeared over the “Mona Lisa” to soup splashed over “Sunflowers,” recent climate protests at art galleries have grabbed international headlines but also raise questions about the effectiveness of these high-profile guerrilla tactics. 

Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” was the latest painting to fall victim to art-based activism, which has seen environmental campaigners target famous artworks, almost always with cheap food products, to draw attention to the usage of fossil fuels.  

Two men wearing “Just Stop Oil” T-shirts jumped the rope separating the priceless 1665 Dutch masterpiece from the public at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague on Thursday. A video posted on Twitter showed one of them pouring a can of a red substance over the other, who then appeared to attempt to glue his head to the glass-protected painting.

“How do you feel when you see something beautiful and priceless being apparently destroyed before your very eyes?” one of the men, who has yet to be identified, said with his hand stuck to the wall. “That is that same feeling when you see the planet being destroyed,” he said later.

Like the other targeted artworks, the painting was not damaged by the stunt, which came a day after a report from the United Nations found that the world is on track to increase greenhouse gas emissions — widely believed to be responsible for human-caused climate change — by 10.6% compared with 2010 levels. 

“The aim of a lot of these actions is to get a platform that thousands or more people are watching so that they can communicate very clear lines — that the climate crisis is happening, it’s bad, and we all need to wake up,” Chris Saltmarsh, a climate activist and author of “Burnt: Fighting for Climate Justice” told NBC News on the telephone Friday. 

Saltmarsh, who was not connected with the protests, said that they had an immediate payoff in terms of successfully gaining media coverage, but he questioned their long term effectiveness.

“It’s superficially radical and disruptive but is not part of a long-term, coherent strategy for building communities and power,” he said.

But Colin Sterling, an assistant professor of heritage and museum studies at the University of Amsterdam, said the protests had the potential to remain in the public consciousness for a long time.

The “Rokeby Venus,” slashed multiple times with a butcher’s knife by women’s rights activist Mary Richardson at the National Gallery in London in 1914, “is still discussed today,” he said.

He said that the image of the ruptured painting by Diego Velasquez was “on the cover of books as a moment of iconoclastic protest.”

The annual United Nations climate change conference, known as COP27, which this year will be held in Egypt in November, was a kind of galvanizing force across many different dimensions of the climate movement, Sterling said, adding that there was “always an uptick in actions” around the time of the conference.

But he said that war in Ukraine, the cost of living and energy crises had added urgency to the protests.

While politicians have taken note of the protests, they have tended to criticize the way they have been carried out.

“Demonstrating is a great thing and everyone has the right to make a point. But please: leave our shared heritage alone. Attacking defenseless works of art is not the right way,” Gunay Uslu, the Dutch culture and media minister tweeted Thursday.

British Foreign Minister James Cleverly was more blunt after activists threw soup on Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery in London earlier this month.

“Let’s stop giving these attention-seeking adult toddlers the coverage they clearly crave,” he said on Twitter.

On Wednesday the British government passed a public order bill designed to make protests, such as those seen in art galleries and disruptive actions on roads, more difficult for activists who will face harsher sentences if prosecuted.

But Saltmarsh said he doubted the legislation would be effective.

“What we’ve seen from Extinction Rebellion and other climate activist groups is that they’re very prepared to go to prison,” he said.

“Having a lot of environmental campaigners in prison is strategically important,” he said. “It’s a way of building support and creating a crisis for the government.”

U.S. releases Guantanamo’s oldest prisoner after almost 18 years

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The oldest prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention center was released and “reunited with his family” in Pakistan, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement Saturday.

Saifullah Paracha, 75, had been held on suspicion of ties to Al Qaeda since 2003, but he was never charged with a crime during the more than 17 years he was detained at the U.S. base in Cuba, according to Reprieve, a legal charity that represents him and has campaigned for his release.

“We are glad that a Pakistani citizen detained abroad is finally reunited with his family,” the statement said. It said the Foreign Ministry had “completed an extensive interagency process” to facilitate his repatriation.

The Pentagon said in a statement Saturday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had “notified Congress of his intent to repatriate Saifullah Paracha to Pakistan” last month.

It also praised the willingness of Pakistan and other partners to support “ongoing U.S. efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility.”

Paracha was notified in May 2021 that he had been approved for release by the prisoner review board, Shelby Sullivan-Bennis, who represented him at his November 2020 hearing, told The Associated Press at the time.

It was his eighth appearance, according to the review board’s website. The review board was established under former President Barack Obama to try to prevent the release of prisoners who authorities believed might engage in anti-U.S. hostilities upon their release from Guantanamo.

As is customary, the notification did not provide detailed reasoning for the decision and concluded only that Paracha is “not a continuing threat” to the United States, Sullivan-Bennis told the AP.

Once a wealthy businessman who lived in the U.S. and owned property in New York City, Paracha was captured in 2003 in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

He was accused of being an Al Qaeda “facilitator” who helped two of the conspirators in the 9/11 plot with a financial transaction.

Paracha said he did not know the men were Al Qaeda and has always denied any involvement in terrorism and the events of Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists from the Islamic militant group crashed planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. Heroic passengers aboard another plane fought terrorists and prevented it from reaching Washington.

Paracha was then transferred to the U.S.-run Bagram airbase in Afghanistan before he was taken to Guantanamo in 2004, according to Reprieve.

Washington has long asserted that it can hold detainees indefinitely without charge under the international laws of war.

“Saifullah is returning to his family as a frail old man, having been taken from them in the prime of his life. That injustice can never be rectified,” Maya Foa, the executive director of Reprieve, told NBC News via Twitter on Saturday.

“The Biden administration deserves some credit for expediting the release of Guantánamo detainees who were never charged with a crime, but the U.S.’ embrace of indefinite detention without trial has done lasting damage,” she said.

Paracha’s son, Uzair Paracha, was convicted in 2005 in federal court in New York of providing support to terrorism, based in part on testimony from the same witnesses held at Guantanamo whom the U.S. relied on to justify holding the father.

In March 2020, after a judge threw out those witness accounts and the U.S. government decided not to seek a new trial, the younger Paracha was released and sent back to Pakistan.

Almost 800 men and boys have been unlawfully detained at Guantanamo since it was opened by the Bush White House in 2002, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. This has not been confirmed by government officials.

The ACLU also alleges that many detainees were subjected to torture and other brutal treatment. NBC News cannot verify these claims.

Following Paracha’s release, 35 detainees remain in Guantanamo Bay and 18 have been cleared for release, according to Amnesty International. NBC News has not confirmed this information.

The most high-profile prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay prison is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

WASHINGTON — A former Capitol Police officer who warned a Jan. 6 defendant about a post that said he was inside the Capitol building was found guilty on one count of felony obstruction of justice by a jury on Friday.

Michael Riley was indicted in October 2021 on two counts of obstruction of justice and resigned from the Capitol Police force shortly thereafter. At his trial this month, federal prosecutors argued that Riley “betrayed” his oath by sending Jan. 6 defendant Jacob Hiles a Facebook message, warning that the FBI and law enforcement were planning to charge everyone who entered the building.

“[I’]m a capitol police officer who agrees with your political stance,” Riley wrote in a message he later deleted after Hiles’ arrest. “Take down the part about being in the building they are correctly investigating and everyone who was in the building is going to be charged. Just looking out!”

The jury was not able to reach a verdict on the first count, which related to the message he sent to the rioter. But they did find him guilty of a second count for deleting his messages with Hiles after he found out Hiles had been talking to the FBI.

The jury had been deliberating since Tuesday afternoon, by far the lengthiest deliberations of any Jan. 6-related jury trial. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, in Washington, D.C., declared a mistrial on the first obstruction count, and it isn’t clear whether federal prosecutors will seek to try Riley again on that count given that two convictions wouldn’t make much difference at sentencing.

Taking the stand in his own defense Monday, Riley told jurors he was “embarrassed” by the messages he sent to Hiles, but insisted that he did not intend to obstruct a grand jury proceeding.

“I was embarrassed because I had reached out to him in the first place and allowed myself to get in a position like this,” Riley told jurors in court on Monday. “I never intended for any of this to happen.”

Defense attorney Christopher Macchiaroli argued during his closing on Tuesday that jurors may feel that Riley should have done something differently and reported Hiles, but said the case “is not about failure to report” but whether Riley intentionally obstructed a grand jury proceeding.

“I said this was a complex case. It is,” Macchiaroli argued. “It is not easy, you will have doubts in this case. They will be reasonable. Follow them.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Dohrmann argued that Riley’s intentions were clear, that he knew the FBI was involved in the “massive investigation” into Jan. 6 and he knew that the FBI uses federal grand juries.

“The only thing you need to do … is apply your common sense,” Dohrmann argued.

“He was thinking, how do I get this rioter, my Facebook friend, from being caught up in this grand jury investigation,” Dohrmann argued.

Riley, a former K-9 officer with the Capitol Police, was one of the first officers to respond to the Republican National Committee building near the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 after someone left a pipe bomb there, along with a bomb at the Democratic National Committee down the street.

Later that night, Riley and his dog helped sweep the Capitol building so that Congress could return into their joint session and certify President Joe Biden’s victory over former President Donald Trump.

ตากใบ-กรือเซะ กลับมาหลอน ทักษิณ !!

จะเป็นด้วยสาเหตุ “ปากพาจน” หรือมาจากนิสัยดั้งเดิมหรือเปล่าก็ไม่อาจคาดเดาได้ถูกต้อง สำหรับนายทักษิณ ชินวัตร หรือ แม้ว” หรือในชื่อฝรั่งยุคใหม่เรียกขานว่า “โทนี่ วู้ดซั่ม” เพราะจากเหตุการณ์ “ตากใบ” เมื่อวันที่ 25 ตุลาคม 2547 ที่มีผู้เสียชีวิตถึง 85 ราย จากการถูกบังคับให้นอนซ้อนทับกันในรถบรรทุกทหารขณะถูกควบคุมตัว หรือเหตุการณ์ก่อนหน้านั้นที่ “มัสยิดกรือเซะ” เมื่อวันที่ 28 เมษายน 2547 ที่มีคนตายถึง 34 ศพ

หรือหากย้อนไปอีกนิดหนึ่งก็ต้องไปดูเหตุการณ์ “ปล้นปืน” จำนวน 413 กระบอก จากกองพันพัฒนาที่ 4 ค่ายกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ต.ปิเหล็ง อ.เจาะไอร้อง จ.นราธิวาส เมื่อวันที่ 4 มกราคม 2547 เหตุการณ์ครั้งนี้มีทหารเสียชีวิต 4 นาย
ทุกเหตุการณ์ล้วนมีสาเหตุและปลายเหตุ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งมีการสรุปว่าเป็น “ความผิดพลาดด้านนโยบาย” และแนวทางการปฏิบัติสั่งการจากรัฐบาลในขณะนั้น ยังอยู่ภายใต้การนำของนายทักษิณ ชินวัตร และแม้ว่าจากความผิดพลาดดังกล่าวนำมาสู่เหตุการณ์รุนแรงบานปลาย ทำให้สถานการณ์ในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ต้องร้อนระอุ มีการคาดการณ์กันว่าจากวันนั้นถึงวันนี้ มีผู้เสียชีวิตรวมแล้วไม่ต่ำกว่า 5 พันศพ และบาดเจ็บอีกร่วมหมื่นคน ความแตกแยกขยายวงกว้างเรื่อยมา

แต่ที่ผ่านมาจนถึงวันนี้ นายทักษิณ ชินวัตร ที่เพิ่งจะเอ่ยคำขอโทษ แต่ขณะเดียวกันกลับไม่แสดงความรับผิดชอบ กลับโบ้ยความผิดไปให้คนอื่นรับไปเต็มๆ คนเดียว โดยเฉพาะผู้บัญชาการทหารบกในขณะนั้น คือ พล.อ.ประวิตร วงษ์สุวรรณ รวมไปถึงการอ้างว่า “มีกลุ่มทหารไม่ชอบเขาที่สร้างสถานการณ์ เพื่อนำไปสู่การรัฐประหาร” ว่าเข้าไปนั่นเสียอีก

จากคำพูดที่ว่า “โจรกระจอก” หลังจากคนร้ายลอบวางระเบิดที่สถานีรถไฟหาดใหญ่ จังหวัดสงขลา เมื่อวันที่ 7 เมษายน 2544 ที่เขาระบุว่า “ไม่มีการแบ่งแยกดินแดน ไม่มีผู้ก่อการร้ายอุดมการณ์ มีแต่โจรกระจอก” และจากเหตุการณ์ปล้นปืน จากกองพันพัฒนาที่ 4 เมื่อวันที่ 4 มกราคม 2547 ว่า “สมควรตาย” พร้อมๆ กับการใช้วิธีการที่เขาบอกเองว่า ใช้วิธีการ “แบบตำรวจ” และใช้นโยบาย “กำปั้นเหล็ก” มีการยุบเลิกศูนย์บริหารจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ (ศอ.บต.) และศูนย์ พตท.43 ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดูแลความสงบในจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ แล้วให้อำนาจขึ้นตรงกับ “ผู้ว่าซีอีโอ” ตามแนวทางของนายทักษิณ ในรัฐบาลขณะนั้น

จะว่าไปแล้วเหตุการณ์ครั้งนั้นทำท่าจะค่อยๆเงียบไปแล้ว อาจมีบ้างที่บางปีจะเกิดเหตุรุนแรงมีการก่อเหตุในช่วงครบรอบในวันที่ 25 ตุลาคม แต่ปีนี้อาจพิเศษหน่อยตรงที่ นายทักษิณ ชินวัตร เกิดให้สัมภาษณ์ออกรายการในคลับเฮาส์ “กลุ่มแคร์” เครือข่ายของเขา กลับจดจำเหตุการณ์ขึ้นมาได้อย่างละเอียด ผิดกับเมื่อปี 2564 ที่ครั้งนั้นเมื่อถูกถาม เขากลับบอกว่า “จำไม่ค่อยได้” แต่ปีนี้เล่าเป็นฉากๆ โยนให้ฝ่ายทหารรับไปเต็มๆ อ้างทำนองว่า “ทำกันเอง” เขาไม่รู้เรื่อง พร้อมกับโบ้ยให้ไปถาม “บิ๊กป้อม” ที่เป็นผู้บัญชาการทหารบกในขณะนั้น และบอกอีกว่าเป็นเพราะทหารที่ไม่ชอบเขาวางแผนสร้างสถานการณ์ก่อรัฐประหาร ว่ากันไปโน่น

อย่างไรก็ดี เหตุการณ์ที่ว่านี้ทำท่าจะไม่จบสวยๆ แน่นอน เมื่อล่าสุด นายชวน หลีกภัย ประธานสภาผู้แทนราษฎร ประธานสภาที่ปรึกษาพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ ที่ถูกนายทักษิณ ชินวัตร ฟ้องข้อหาหมิ่นประมาท จากสาเหตุที่ นายชวน ไปบรรยายเกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์มัสยิดกรือเซะ และตากใบ เมื่อปี 2555 และคดีจะหมดอายุความในวันที่ 28 ตุลาคมนี้ แต่นายชวน ได้เร่งรัดให้ฟ้องร้องก่อนคดีหมดอายุความในสามวัน ล่าสุดได้มีการส่งฟ้องแล้ว เมื่อวันที่ 25 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา และมีการมอบหมายให้ทนายความดำเนินการต่อสู้คดี

ก่อนหน้านั้น นายชวน หลีกภัย ประธานรัฐสภา กล่าวถึงกรณีมอบหมายให้ นายราเมศ รัตนะเชวง เลขานุการประธานรัฐสภา เป็นทนายความติดตามคดีที่ถูกนายทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ฟ้องร้องฐานหมิ่นประมาท กรณีบรรยายพาดพิงเกี่ยวกับความรุนแรงในเหตุการณ์กรือเซะ – ตากใบ เมื่อปี 2555 ว่า คดีดังกล่าวจะหมดอายุความ ในวันที่ 28 ตุลาคมนี้ แต่คดียังอยู่ที่สถานีตำรวจ ยังไม่มีหมายเรียกมาถึงตน ดังนั้นถ้าตนต้องรอหมาย คดีอาจจะขาดอายุความได้ และจะส่งผลให้ตำรวจและอัยการเสียหาย

ส่วนตัวถือหลักว่า ทุกคนต้องอยู่ภายใต้กฎหมายเท่าเทียมกัน จึงได้ขอให้นายราเมศ ประสานตำรวจและอัยการ และขอให้อัยการดำเนินการฟ้องร้องตนเอง เพื่อไม่ให้อายุความขาด และเมื่อตนถูกกล่าวหาก็มีหน้าที่สู้คดีไปตามกระบวนการ ทำให้ขณะนี้อัยการมีการสั่งฟ้องเป็นที่เรียบร้อย และได้มีการพิมพ์ลายนิ้วมือในฐานะผู้ถูกกล่าวหาแล้ว

นายชวน กล่าวต่อว่า ส่วนกรณีหมายเรียกรับทราบข้อกล่าวหาที่ยังไปไม่ถึงตนนั้น เพิ่งได้รับรายงานเมื่อสักครู่ที่ผ่านมาว่า หมายดังกล่าวเพิ่งไปถึงที่บ้านที่จังหวัดตรัง

“สิ่งสำคัญที่สุดในระบอบประชาธิปไตย ทุกคนต้องเคารพกฎหมาย และทุกคนต้องรับผิดชอบ ผมเป็นคนพูดอะไรพูดตรง ไม่พูดอะไรที่ไม่จริง และเมื่อพูดแล้วก็ต้องรับผิดชอบกับคำพูด เมื่อมีคดีเกิดขึ้นก็ต้องว่าไปตามกฎหมาย” นายชวน กล่าว

ผู้สื่อข่าวถามว่ายังยืนยันว่าที่เกิดขึ้นกรณีกรือเซะ-ตากใบ เป็นความผิดพลาดของรัฐบาลในขณะนั้นจริง ใช่หรือไม่ นายชวน กล่าวว่า เรื่องที่ฟ้องร้องเป็นเรื่องจากสถานการณ์ในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ ซึ่งเป็นนโยบายการแก้ไขปัญหาในสมัยนั้น มีการใช้คำพูดเรียกว่า โจรกระจอก ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่ตนยืนยันหลายครั้ง ว่าเป็นความผิดพลาดที่นำไปสู่ความสูญเสียครั้งสำคัญจนมาถึงทุกวันนี้ แต่ทั้งหมดเนื่องจากเมื่อเป็นคดีความแล้ว ก็ปล่อยให้เป็นเรื่องของคดี

กลายเป็นว่าแทนที่จะปล่อยให้หมดอายุความ แต่นายชวน กลับต้องการพิสูจน์ความจริงในชั้นศาลว่า สิ่งที่ตัวเองพูดว่าเหตุการณ์ความรุนแรงในจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ เกิดจาก “ความผิดพลาด” ในการดำเนินนโยบายของรัฐบาลในยุคนั้น (นายทักษิณ ชินวัตร) จนทำให้สถานการณ์บานปลายเกิดความสูญเสียตามมามากมาย ซึ่งเมื่อทุกอย่างเข้าสู่ชั้นศาล ก็ต้องมาพิสูจน์กันว่าผลสรุปจะออกมาแบบไหน

แต่เหตุการณ์ทั้งกรณี “ตากใบ-กรือเซะ” ยังต้องกลายเป็นภาพหลอนกับ นายทักษิณ ชินวัตร ตลอดไป แม้ว่าจะพยายามกลบเกลื่อนแบบไหนก็ตาม เหมือนกับคราวนี้ ที่พยายามโยนความผิดให้คนอื่น พร้อมกับหวังผลทางการเมือง แต่กลายเป็นว่า ทุกอย่างกำลังกลับย้อนเข้ามาตัวเอง หลังจากที่คดีในศาลต้องดำเนินต่อไป และพิสูจน์ความจริงออกมาให้เห็นความผิดพลาด !!

คดีฟ้องร้องในความผิดฐานหมิ่นประมาท ที่ ทักษิณ ชินวัตร  แจ้งความดำเนินคดี ชวน หลีกภัย ประธานรัฐสภา กรณีออกมาวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ การแก้ปัญหาความไม่สงบเรียบร้อยในพื้นที่สามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ สมัยรัฐบาลทักษิณ ที่ตอนนี้ มีการยื่นฟ้อง ชวน ต่อศาลอาญากรุงเทพใต้ไปแล้ว เมื่อ25 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา ก่อนคดีขาดอายุความเพียงไม่กี่วัน บอกได้เลยว่า การสู้คดีนี้ในชั้นศาล เข้มข้นแน่นอน  หลังพบว่า   “บัณฑิต ศิริพันธุ์”เจ้าของฉายา ทนายเทวดา จะเป็นทนายความหลักในการว่าความคดี ให้กับ ชวน ที่ตกเป็นจำเลย

อันเป็นการกลับมาว่าความอีกครั้ง ของ บัณฑิต ทนายความชื่อดัง จากสำนักงานทนายความเสนีย์ ปราโมช หลังหายหน้าไปหลายปี แต่งานนี้ คัมแบ็ก

เพื่อมาช่วย  ชวน ฟาดฟันกับฝ่ายทีมทนายทักษิณที่รับรองได้ว่า  สืบพยานทุกนัด  ร้อนระอุ ทะลุองศาเดือด กลางห้องพิจารณาคดีของศาล

LA City Council censures Latino members amid racism scandal

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council formally rebuked two members and its former president Wednesday for their involvement in a racism scandal that has led to days of protests, police and state investigations and shaken public faith in City Hall.

The 12-0 vote to censure former council President Nury Martinez and Councilmen Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León represented the strongest step the council can take to publicly reprimand them for their participation in a secretly recorded 2021 meeting laced with crude, bigoted comments, in which the Latino Democrats schemed to protect their political clout in the redrawing of council districts at the expense of Blacks and renters.

The council cannot expel members — it can only suspend a member when criminal charges are pending. While a censure is largely symbolic, it adds new weight to the pressure coming from across the political spectrum for Cedillo and de León to resign.

Councilman Paul Koretz said he remained in shock from listening to the offensive remarks that he said had severely damaged trust in government. Like it or not, he lamented that the recording reflected on the entire council.

“It’s going to take us years to rebuild this trust,” Koretz said before the vote.

Councilman Curren Price called the censure a “crucial step in a long road to healing” and the harshest measure the council could take, lacking the ability to expel members.

Martinez resigned shortly after the release of the tape earlier this month, along with a powerful labor leader, Ron Herrera, who also attended the meeting.

However, Cedillo and de León have resisted widespread calls to step down, including from President Joe Biden, and have become political pariahs among their colleagues.

Anyone involved in the meeting “does not belong in elected office,” Koretz said.

Earlier, the council meeting was called into recess to allow police to clear chanting protesters. A small but noisy group crowded into the main aisle of an otherwise mostly empty chamber, banged water bottles on a lectern, whooped and shouted in what appeared to be an effort to shut down the meeting. They unrolled a large sign calling the council “illegitimate.”

“Justice now!” they bellowed. “Shut down!”

That led to a standoff in which about 20 protesters continued shouting as police officers watched over the group. Eventually, the room was cleared.

Council President Paul Krekorian warned the protesters they would not deter the council’s business. “We will continue to do the work of the people of Los Angeles,” he said.

It’s not known who made the tape, or why. It was released on the website Reddit just weeks before the November midterm elections.

In the course of the hourlong meeting, they also made offensive remarks about immigrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, Jews, Armenians and other groups.

Two investigations are underway stemming from the release of the tape.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating whether the recording was made illegally — under California law, all parties must consent to the recording of a private conversation or phone call.

Separately, the state is investigating how the council districts were drawn and whether the process was rigged. Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, has said his investigation could lead to civil liability or criminal charges, depending on what is found.

Bonta said Wednesday that his office notified the city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, where the meeting took place, to preserve evidence, a routine step in an investigation.

Bonta would not speculate whether the union building was broadly wiretapped, or if the recording was an isolated event made by a single individual. He said he would largely defer to the police to investigate whether the recording was illegal.

The council appears headed into a long period of turmoil.

Cedillo and de León have not attended recent meetings.

Cedillo, whose term ends in December, has been out of public view. De León has two years left in his term and has appeared in a string of media interviews apologizing and saying he wants to continue his work on the council.

In an interview Tuesday with talk-show host Tavis Smiley on KBLA radio, de León reiterated that he was not resigning. “I’m not the person the folks have been painting me to be,” said de León, who previously has apologized.

Krekorian, the president, and other council members have said Cedillo and de León must resign.

“There is no realistic possibility that you can effectively continue to serve,” Krekorian recently told de León in a letter. “Every day you remain interferes with the council’s ability to function, delays the city’s healing process, hurts your constituents and reduces your chance of redeeming yourself.”
